Re the
midsemester exam:
The
Midsemester Exam was held on Saturday 28 April at
8am
The Special
Midsemester Exam will be held at 5pm on Tuesday
8th May 2001 in room 50-S201
You do not
need to know the Appendix B to the notes.
The exam
covers everything discussed in lectures up to the end of week 6;
thus it covers the vectors, matrices, determinants, functions,
limits, and continuity.
Read these
sections of the printed lecture notes. For text book references
see the link later on this page!

First
grounds/procedures for special mid-semester exam
Approval for
special exams for mid-semester central exams is the
responsibility of the School. (Departmental exams are handled by
the
lecturer concerned). Please refer any students applying for
specials for
central exams to the School office. There is a form to complete
and the
student is required to provide documentary evidence to support
their
claim.
Regarding grounds for approval for specials, we will be following
the
policyset out in the Assessment Rules.
The School office will advise the students if their application
is
approved
or not. We will advise you if special exams have been approved
for your
courses.
There are no
supps for mid-semester exams as they are not
"end of semester exams" as specified in the various
program rules.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT:
Assessment will be based on the following two
components:

- Failure to complete any part of any item
of the assessment will result in your receiving a mark of
0 for that part of that item of the assessment.
To determine your grade for MATH1050 we will use the the
sum of marks from the mid and end of semester exams (or
use the end of semester examination marked out of 100
instead of out of 70, if this yields a greater mark) and
apply the
``ASSESSMENT CRITERIA'' listed at the end of this guide.
- Two hour written examination at the end
of the semester held at a time to be advised by
Examinations Section.
- There will also be about ten weekly tutorial
assignments (starting in week 2 ).
These are handed in to your tutor (see below for
appropriate labelling!)
Tutorial marks are formative (for feedback) rather
than summative (for grading) although in border-line
cases tutorial marks will be used to mark up a
border-line student provided a reasonable number of
assignments have been competently completed. There is
also a high correlation between students who hand in all
the assignments and who pass the examination!
- Anything discussed in lectures is
examinable. In addition problems from assignments and
tutorials as well as similar problems may form part of
the written exam.
- Some sample solutions with marking schemes
will be provided during the semester.
Examinations
- MID-SEMESTER EXAMINATION
This will be held at a time and place to be advised by
the examinations section but most likely will be on a
Saturday between the 14th and the 28th April. It will be
approximately one hour long. Further details, including a
mock version of the test for practise, will be given out
in the first half of semester.
- END OF SEMESTER EXAMINATION
This will be 2 hours long, plus 10 minutes for perusal,
and will be held in the usual examination period. It is
timetabled centrally by examinations section, and your
lecturers have no power over the
choice of the date or time! At the end of semester there
is a week of ``swot vac'', starting
Monday 11 June, and there will be revision tutorials held
during that time; details will be provided later.
Special Examinations
- If a few students have extremely good
reasons for being unable to attend this mid-semester
examination, then they should request in writing and no
later than one week after the examination to take a
special mid-semester exam at a time and place to be
advised. This request should be addressed to your
lecturer, labelled MATH1050, and handed in to the School
of Physical Sciences Office for a decision on your
request. Ths School office is 67-641 BUT will move to
another building during the semester (See the MATH1050
Homepage for information updates). In their letter, the
student should clearly state the grounds for their
inability to attend the scheduled mid-semester test.
- Contact your Faculty Office for policy and
procedures re final exams including special final exams.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
- Solutions will be marked for accuracy,
appropriateness of mathematical
techniques and clarity of presentation, as demonstrated
by examples
presented in lectures.
- To earn a Grade of 7, a student
must achieve a final mark of at least 85% and demonstrate
an excellent understanding of MATH1050. This includes
clear expression of nearly all their deductions and
explanations, the use of appropriate and efficient
mathematical techniques and accurate answers to nearly
all questions and tasks with appropriate justification.
They will be able to apply techniques to completely solve
both theoretical and practical problems.
- To earn a Grade of 6, a student
must achieve a final mark of at least 75% and demonstrate
a comprehensive understanding of MATH1050. This includes
clear expression of most of their deductions and
explanations, the general use of appropriate and
efficient mathematical techniques and accurate answers to
most questions and tasks with appropriate justification.
They will be able to apply techniques to partially solve
both theoretical and practical problems.
- To earn a Grade of 5, a student
must achieve a final mark of at least 65% and demonstrate
an adequate understanding of MATH1050. This includes
clear expression of some of their deductions and
explanations, the use of appropriate and efficient
mathematical techniques in some situations and accurate
answers to some questions and tasks with appropriate
justification. They will be able to apply techniques to
solve fundamental problems.
- To earn a Grade of 4, a student
must achieve a final mark of at least 50% and demonstrat
an understanding of the basic concepts of MATH1050. This
includes occasionally expressing their deductions and
explanations clearly, the occasional use of appropriate
and efficient mathematical techniques and accurate
answers to a few questions and tasks with appropriate
justification. They will have demonstrated knowledge of
techniques used to solve problems and applied this
knowledge in some cases.
- To earn a Grade of 3, a student
must achieve a final mark of at least 45% and demonstrate
some knowledge of the basic concepts of MATH1050. This
includes occasional expression of their deductions and
explanations, the use of a few appropriate and efficient
mathematical techniques and attempts to answer a few
questions and tasks accurately and with appropriate
justification. They will have demonstrated knowledge of
techniques used to solve problems.
- To earn a Grade of 2, a student
must achieve a final mark of at least 20% and demonstrate
some knowledge of the basic concepts of MATH1050. This
includes attempts at expressing their deductions and
explanations and attempts to answer a few questions
accurately.
- A student will receive a Grade of 1
if they achieve a final mark of at most 19 % or
demonstrate extremely poor knowledge of the basic
concepts in the course material. This includes attempts
at answering some questions but showing an extremely poor
understanding of the key concepts.
