The page gives a list of known issues in the third edition of A Portable Introduction to Data Analysis, published in July 2004.
The errata are classified as being explanatory notes, simple typos or real mathematical errors.
If you find an error in the book then email m.bulmer@uq.edu.au. The first person to report each error will receive a Freddo Frog. (If it is a mathematical error then you get a filled Freddo!)
A minor revision of the third edition was released in January 2005 which corrected all the errors listed here, except those highlighted in grey.
Page | Type | Description |
iii | Typo | "fully expositions" should be "longer expositions" |
3 | Typo | an age measured in whole years |
5 | Typo | ... so that we can see how our results match up ... |
8 | Typo | "Sharede" in table should be "Shared" |
11 | Typo | trialing a new drug |
15 | Typo | random processes |
21 | Typo | variability in sleep |
24 | Typo | contribution of histograms | 31 | Math | The quartiles are wrong in the weight example. They should be Q1 = 51 and Q3 = 70. |
47 | Typo | particularly since it squares the deviations |
47 | Typo | "male and female heights have roughly the same amount of variability" |
49 | Typo | "(see Section 9)" |
52 | Typo | "The histogram is a an example of" should be "The histogram is an example of" |
64 | Typo | y values above the y mean |
111 | Typo | "so his work was published" |
120 | Typo | "Here 180 cm is 13 cm above the mean" |
156 | Math | The denominator in the z calculation should be 2.36, not 3.83. The value of z is still correct. |
165 | Note | The 13.291 in the calculation is the sample standard deviation (s) of the 30 weights in Table 1.4. |
178 | Typo | The first row in Table 25.1 should be "High" and the second "Normal". |
186 | Typo | The denominator should be 19, not 18, in the confidence interval calculation. (The margin of error, 5.52, is still correct.) |
188 | Typo | Exercise 1 should compare "dye uptake", not "growth". |
200 | Math | In the formula for se(ln(RR)), the numerators should be b/a and d/c (not a/b and c/d). This changes the numbers in the example. |
202 | Typo | The model for linear regression should have a capital Y, so Y = β0 + β1x + U. |
211, 212 | Typo | The use of "log" on these pages should be replaced by "ln" for consistency. |
213 | Typo | "the assumptions for small samples". |
222 | Typo | The caption for Table 32.3 should have "pulse rate" instead of "hours slept". |
222 | Typo | Second last line: "there will be a lot of these" (not "we"). |
252 | Math | The Interaction MS in Table 35.6 is 0.00384. |
284 | Math | The P-value from t19=1.41 is 0.087, not 0.174, since this is a one-sided test. |
