MT140: Basic Mathematics Homepage

This is the home page for MT140, Semester 1, 2000. You may like to check this page, and the associated links, with some frequency. Most information about the subject will be made available on these pages.

Late breaking news

This section will contain important information (on topics such as exams), updated throughout semester.

Pre-exam study classes will be held at St Lucia, building 67 (maths building), rooms 3.16, 3.17 and 3.18 at all times between 8am and 5pm on Thursday 8th June and Friday 9th June (so the 2 days before the exam). I'll be there, with tutors at various times, and you're welcome to come along. I also have a second sample exam (with solutions) which you might like to sit under pretend exam conditions (to get your timing and pace of working right).

Click here for a postscript copy of a sample final exam. You will need a postscript previewer for this to work. Solutions to this sample are handwritten and not on the web. Copies are outside my office, on the floor, in a folder.

Click here for a text list of midsemester exam marks. Marks are out of 90, and each student's mark is given, followed by their student number. This is a completely updated list of marks (so if you see any errors, contact me).

Click here for an html list of assignment marks. Each of assignments 1 to 12 are listed. This list has been updated as of Wednesday morning, 7th June (so if you see any errors, contact me). A hardcopy of this list is on the wall outside my office.

There is at least one error in the sample final exam solutions. For some errors in the subject matter, sample exam and solutions, check the link to errors included in the section on subject material below.

MT140 Forum

Have you got a burning question about MT140 that you want to ask? Your question could be about the content of the subject, difficulties you are having, suggestions for improvements, and so on. You can also read questions posted by other students (and answers to the questions).

The forum is the place to go!

Tutorial times and tutors

We have seven different tutorial times on the St Lucia campus. You should sign-on for one time, but you can attend as many as you like. Hand in your assignment at the time for which you signed on. You must include your tutor's name at the top of each assignment.

Subject material

Fell asleep during class? Too busy flirting with the person next to you to listen? Not sure of this week's assignment questions? During semester, links will be placed here for each week's work. This includes topics covered, reading suggestions, key points you should understand, and the relevant assignment questions. Note that additional work is done in the lectures (eg problems are solved, printed notes are annotated). Also, errors in the notes may be corrected. So don't rely entirely on these copies of the notes!

For copies of all slides used in lectures (divided into sections), click here.

For a list of known errors in the lectures, tutorials or assignment solutions, click here.
